Neal,

How do we make it so we have our own “Avatar” (graphical representation of a user) like you do on your forum posts?

Great question.

The MemoryPress forum supports http://www.gravatar.com

This allows you to create your Avatar in one place and use it on anywebsite that supports Gravatar.

To get your own Avatar:

  1. Go to Gravatar
  2. Create an account using the same email address you used to sign up for MemoryPress
  3. Follow the instructions on the website to create your Avatar

Ok, I’m such a geek. I was totally excited to set up my own avatar. I signed up and added the photo, BUT it doesn’t show up when I post. What did I do wrong?

Why doesn’t my name show up on my post like yours does? It should say Liz

Two more steps:

  1. click on your email address inside of Gravatar (it should say “Select a gravatar below to assign to this email address”)
  2. click on the Avatar that you’ve uploaded below and click “Confirm”

It took an hour for mine to show up.

Liz,

To update your forum display name, go to https://memorypress.familylearn.com/account_info

Thanks,
Neal

I had already done the extra 2 steps before I posted. It still didn’t work for me. Maybe it will with this post. At least this time, my name will show up :)

OK, I discovered that Gravatar is becoming so popular that they can’t keep up. I’m posting the article here.

Gravatar image update

Service Status

Some of you may have noticed that there have been issues with the Gravatar service so people’s images haven’t been showing up properly. The service is undergoing a pretty major overhaul to accoomodate the growth and consequently the service is spotty and the new registrations and logins are currently unavailable.

What is Gravatar?

A gravatar is a 80×80 pixel image that you can use to visually represent yourself on the web. Use the same email address to create an account at www.gravatar.com. Upload a pic and once it’s approved it’ll automatically show up. You can use the same avatar image on any Gravatar-enabled website or blog. Just use the same email address and it will automatically show up. Gravatar uses MPAA-style ratings so that we can ensure only appropriate images show up on our site.

How We Use It

We cache the gravatars locally to speed up the load times since we saw that gravatar was having performance issues. The local cache is updated daily and we only use images that are rated PG or G. If you don’t have a gravatar, you’ll get the default baby Foodha image.

Where’s my Gravatar?

If you’re gravatar isn’t showing up, there’s a couple possible reasons:

  • Your cached version hasn’t been updated yet – We update nightly but it only works if the Gravatar service itself is up. If it hasn’t shown up in awhile and the Gravatar service is up, send us a message and we’ll look into it.
  • Your image is rated higher than G or PG – Sorry, we’re trying to keep the site somewhat family friendly. Please update your image at the Gravatar site to a tamer image.

We’ll continue to make the caching code more robust so we’re even more immune to the service issues.

Thanks for your patience.

- Justin

Hi folks,

The guys at Gravatar.com have fixed their website...

Quoting them…

So, if your gravatar has not been appearing properly, you can reassign it to your email address and it will propogate now.

This means you need to sign in at www.gravatar.com and reassign your avatar to your email address and it will start showing up.

Enjoy!

They say they have fixed it, but they have not. I tried to reassign my avatar, but every time I click ‘Confirm’ it give me an ‘Application Error’ message. I guess I’ll just have to keep waiting till they sort it out.
